Today we traveled cross the Arkadian Mountains on our way to Nafplio. First we stopped at a Klio's Honey Farm. We learned all about honey production.
Picture on the left is the conventional smoker they use now to remove the honeycombs from the hives.
This picture is of the honeybee hive that her grandmother made (on the left). The wood hollowed out log is what the bees also used to produce the honeycombs.
We were then treated with some samples of Honey Marmalade and Honey with a pastry
After lunch we set off to the Mycenaean Pottery shop.
They not only make the pottery, but they also teach the children how to paint on the pottery they made.
Our next stop was our favorite stop of the day...The Karonis Distillery. This distillery has been established since 1869. They produce Ouzo (based on an aromatic plant, Anise), Tsipouro (produced from grapes), Brandy.
After Greece became independent, a long time ago 200 years ago they have the Greek revolution. A long time they were occupied by the Venezias, Bavarians, Greece became independent again around 1820's. For the first 3 years when Greece became independent, the first capital was Nafplio. Nafplio was the last Capital when Athens became the capital in 1834. Nafplio was a big commercial port and a nice place to start a factory cause the mode of transportation was by ship.
Ynas Karonis was the founder of the distillery and his brother joined later on. His brother then went to France to learn about other production of Liqueurs, Brandy, & Wines. Here is the first Purchase Order from France in 1881 of their first machine.
The machine on the right produced Tsipouro. Not sure about the one on the right.

After checking in to our Hotel in Tolo, we had a little nap and then we walked into the town of Tolo for dinner at Maria's Restaurant. The joke was its Mexican food, ha. No, it was definitely Greek.
